Junior Sports Volunteers 2017

Clubs and schools are becoming increasingly aware of the need to encourage more youngsters to become in either volunteering or officiating. This year we had seven candidates for the Volunteer Award.

Isaac Brain (Martial Arts)

Isaac is an Assistant Coach at a Satellite Martial Arts Club held at Dove House School. He also trains with Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy where he helps to recruit new members and assists with equipment. Isaac loves martial arts and has made brilliant progress over 2017. He is a really positive coach and a great role model to others with his hard work and fantastic enthusiasm.

Scott Howe (Martial Arts)

Scott is an assistant coach at a Satellite Martial Arts Club held at Dove House School. He also trains with Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy. Scott coaches others, recruits new members and also manages equipment. He enjoys a range of sports at high levels and is a natural and positive leader as well as being a great model.

Tom Jackson (Cricket)

Tom was the 2017 winner of the ‘Hampshire Outstanding Services to Cricket Award’ and ran the ‘All Stars Cricket Scheme’ where he managed to get 30 players to start playing with the club as well as maintaining them. He completed over 200 hours of volunteering both in coaching, general helping out and as groundsman. He also completed the ‘Hampshire Cricket Young Leaders’ course and attended a ‘Cricket Volunteers’ course. Tom is a qualified level 8 football referee and he referees games in the Peter Houseman Youth League and Southern Junior Premier League.

Calum McLean (Athletics)

Calum has assisted in coaching 30, 7-11 year olds at St Marys School Athletics Club for the last 6 years and his efforts have contributed to the Clubs successes over these years. He prepares equipment for each session, demonstrates all skills required, measures all jumps and throws and times and records each child’s performance. Despite having many operations on his right foot due to talipies, Calum initially joined the club as a year 4 pupil to improve mobility, and whilst balancing school and social activities he continues to volunteer his support to the athletics club of which he is a popular asset.

Toni Shering (Karate)

In 2017 Toni represented Karate Sport England at various international events winning silver in Cadet Kata, Women’s Kata and Team Kumite, along with Bronze in Cadet Kumite at the Karate Sport England National Championships. She is an established team member of the Karate Sport England Squad with her Kumite and is a role model to younger performers who look up to her for advice when competing.

Alicia Stait (Cheerleading)

Alicia, who works with Olivia Weldon, is an exceptional athlete competing at all levels who is also a dedicated and inspiring coach. She is in the gym at every opportunity and when not training, or coaching, she is looking for areas of improvement. She managed the transition of athlete to coach to the Senior Level 2 team and relished the challenge. She is wonderful role model to younger athletes, proving that hard work and commitment helps you to reach your goals.
