Junior Sportswomen

Jnr Sportswoman

A very strong set of 31 applications for Grant Aid, Scholarships plus consideration for the 2017 Junior Sportswoman awards were received. These were reviewed and very tough decisions made resulting in sixteen invited to the Sports Awards at the Apollo Hotel in February and others attending a mayors reception the following week.

Maggie Brown (Kickboxing)

In 2017, Maggie won a gold and silver medal at the Flaunders Open and a bronze medal at the Bristol Open. Maggie travelled to Hungary for a week long kickboxing training camp, training for 5 hours a day. She is an inspiration to all the class, as she is so disciplined and never allows herself to hold back or cut out training. Maggie is a main member of the BKO squad and also helps to teach and organise other students.

Rosie Clarke (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

Rosie competed at the English Championships and won double gold in the adult divisions and 1 gold in her own weight class along with silver in the all weight class division.   She also competed in NAGA where she won 3 golds and 1 silver. She ranked 1st in the country for her age and weight and spent most of the year competing at an adult level. Rosie is a great role model to others within her club and is also a junior coach.

Ayomide Cole (Athletics)

Ayomide reached the 100m semi-finals for u15g at the England Athletics Championship and placed 5th in the 200m. She won gold at the Hampshire Championships in 100m and 200m u13g, silver in 70m hurdles, and bronze in u13 long jump. Ayomide won the 100m at the U13 Inter-Counties match. At the Hampshire Schools u13/14 Championship, she also won the 80m and 200m at the SEAA U13g open. Ayomide is ranked under 13 no. 1 for 200m, no. 2 for 100, and was undefeated in sprints in the Wessex and Alder Valley Leagues.

Xanthe Esslemont (Aerobic Gymnastics)

2017 saw Xanthe compete in the FIG class at the top level of the sport, achieving a personal best individual score during the season and consistently scoring over 17 points. Xanthe was also selected to compete internationally in Bulgaria both as an individual female and as part of a Trio team which was great experience for her. Xanthe is a positive role model to her team members by supporting and encouraging them.

Charlotte Evans (Kickboxing) NATS

Charlotte achieved her blue belt in 2017 and made great improvements in the club. She dedicated herself to training and competing and has inspired everyone else in the club to raise their training and performances. Charlotte made a concerted effort to become a GB team member and took part in many seminars and a week- long training course in Hungary. Charlotte won gold at the Flanders Open, silver at the British Championships, European Junior Cup and Irish Open.

Maddie Gardiner (Tumbling)

Maddie achieved bronze at the Loule Cup individual, and team gold. She was also placed third at the British Championships and managed to final at her first world age championship. She is a great team member, exceeded all her 2017 goals, and works hard to keep her routines.

Shanice George (Aerobic Gymnastics)

Shanice won bronze, and achieved a PB, for her individual routine at the Aerobics British Championships in the 15-17 age category. She went on to represent GB at the Plovdiv Cup in Bulgaria where she won a gold medal in the group routine and 10th overall for her individual routine after many hours of training with her coach.  At the Aerobics Southern Region competition she won silver.

Samantha Girle (Swimming)

Samantha competed in the British Summer Championships in 7 events and finished top 10 for each event. She also competed in the Open Water Nationals for the first time and finished 19th, along with representing Hampshire in the Inter Counties League in Sheffield. Samantha is ranked in the top 25 in 6 different events in England and top 10 in Regionals and County.

Kaitlin Lafferty (Tumbling Gymnastics) NATS

In 2017, Katlin won the 15-16 Silver Medal at the World Age Group Championships in Bulgaria. She was silver medallist at the British Championship and Spring Series One, Nottingham, and Bronze Medallist at the English Championship in Sheffield. Kaitlin continues to work her way up through the rankings and is widely considered as one of the top tumbling gymnasts in her age group.

Mia Lane (Karate)

2017 was the first year Mia competed in fighting at major tournaments. She was consistent in her kata and secured three gold medals in three consecutive tournaments. She started Karate training just over 2 years ago and having had just over one year of competition experience she won a total 5 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronze medals in 2017 (including 2 golds and 1 silver at the WIKF British and Irish National Championships).

Anaya Patel (Table Tennis) NATS

In 2017, Anaya was selected to represent England U18’s at the International Home Countries Tournament and won silver and gold medals in National Championship Doubles in the under 13 group. Anaya is now part of the England Youth Squad and in the u18 category she ranked 21st in England, and 1st in Berkshire County. Anaya had last 16 finishes in both u15/u18 National Championships during 2017.

Isabel Pinder (Athletics)

Isabel won triple gold in 100m, 200m and High Jump, where she equalled the championship best performance of 1m69, at the Hampshire County Championships and placed 1st in High Jump at the English Schools National Championships whilst representing Hampshire. Isabel was undefeated in High Jump in more than 25 competitions entered and ended the season ranked No. 1 for High Jump, 30th for 800m, and 17th for Pentathlon in the under 15 age group.

Toni Shering (Karate) NATS

In 2017 Toni represented Karate Sport England at various international events winning silver in Cadet Kata, Women’s Kata and Team Kumite, along with Bronze in Cadet Kumite at the Karate Sport England National Championships. She is an established team member of the Karate Sport England Squad with her Kumite and is a role model to younger performers who look up to her for advice when competing.

Hannah Smith (Tennis) NATS

During 2017, Hannah won the National Aegon Premier Team Tennis for her club, National School Final Aberdare for her school and also represented England at the Four National Challenge where she won the overall trophy for England. She is a top 3 ranked player in the girls 14 under category and has won 4 Tennis Europe titles (including 3 doubles and one single title). Hannah is also a regular ball kid at the Bournemouth National Finals and volunteers her support at Portsmouth Tennis Centre.

Jessica Sutton (Modern Pentathlon) NATS

Jessica moved into the u19 age group for 2017 and achieved top six finishes in all Pentathlon National competitions. In the Youth International she achieved 11th position and in the new Laser Run competition she completed a number of top three finishes with gold, silver and bronze along with selection to the World Championships in South Africa where she finished 5th both in the mixed relay and individual events.

Daisy Tolhurst (Cheerleading)

2017 was a seminal year for cheerleading in the UK with Crimson Heat Tigers, and member Daisy Tolhurst, becoming the first team from outside the USA to become World Cheerleading Champions at the Varsity World Summit in Orlando Florida. This team has taken cheerleading internationally to a new level showing that teams can compete with the Americans.   Daisy trained hard both with the squad and alone for the world championships and the routine had a difficulty not seen before in Junior 1 cheer.

Emily Cornwall (Athletics)

2017 saw Emily compete at the Hampshire Championships and come 2nd in two events, 80mh and Long Jump. She also finished 4th in the South of England Combined events and 6th at the ESSA South East Schools Combined vents which saw her qualify as an individual for the National Combined Events Final. Emily won the Top Field Award for u17 Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Club and came 3rd at the Basingstoke Club Championships.

Catherine Edwards (Athletics)

Catherine competed for Hampshire at the English Schools National Championships where she gained a personal best in the 300m, and was also chosen to be part of the 4x100m relay. She also represented Hampshire at the Schools Inter-Counties and at the Hampshire County Championships she won bronze medals in both the 300m hurdles and 100m. Catherine ended the year in the top 50 UK ranking for 300m and was awarded the ‘Best Track Newcomer’ at her Clubs Senior Awards evening.

Isla Hignett (Tennis)

Isla was runner up at the 14 and under girls ‘Road to Wimbledon’ County staged event after winning at the club stage. Over the summer she made three regional finals and was semi-finalist and quarter-finalist in three others. Isla is ranked 3rd in the County for her age group and was top seed at the Totally Tennis Aegon Team Premier Division in spring 2017.

Charlotte Huddart (Target Sprint and Shooting 10m Precision Air Gun)

Charlotte was a member of the first ever team to represent GB in Target Sprint at the World Championships in June where they placed 4th. She also gained PB’s at International competitions and National finals as well as a Target Sprint Brit Shooting Junior record. Charlotte is one of only 16 athletes to be part of a new GB Target Sprint squad team.   She also gained two PB’s at National competitions of Precision Air Rifle.

Isabelle Law (Cross Country)

Isabelle ran at the u13g ECCA Saucony English National XC Championship (185th), the National Triathle Championships (10th), and the National Biathle Championships (11th). She also ran at the Hampshire Schools Championships, 3rd place, and the South East Schools Inter-Counties, 12th place. Isabelle also won the 1200m and Javelin in June at the Wessex Young Athletes League match.

Charlyne Lebosse (Swimming)

At the 2017 Hampshire Counties Swimming Championships Charlyne got a bronze medal in the 100 fly and the 200 fly and finished 4th in the 50 fly final. At the South East Region Swimming Championships she qualified and placed 4th in the 50 fly, 5th in the 100 fly and 6th in the 200 fly. In October she qualified in all fly events in the Winter Regional Swimming Championships in Portsmouth.

Julia Lebosse (Swimming)

Julia attended numerous competitions all over the country in 2017 and came second in her age group at the Bluefins Club Championship. At the Hampshire Counties Swimming Championships, she won a silver at 50m breaststroke and came 4th in 100m breaststroke/50m freestyle/200m breaststroke plus 10th in the 100m free. At the South East Region Swimming Championships she qualified and competed in 6 events and narrowly missed out on a national qualification.

Grace Merrin (Swimming)

In 2017, Grace achieved a Regional Base time in 50m breaststroke, swam 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke at Hampshire Counties and also won a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke.   She trains up to 18 hours per week in the Performance Squad at Basingstoke Bluefins and completes at least once a month in order to achieve personal best times. Grace is dedicated to her sport and was presented with a ‘Merit Award’ from her coach at the Bluefins awards night.

Daniella Nash-Oliver – (Athletics and Netball)

Daniella has represented her school in both athletics and netball since year 7. In the summer of 2017 she won the schools district competition, throwing a distance of 21.90m in the discus which saw her progress onto the counties competition. Daniella also captains the schools netball team, demonstrating a range of leadership qualities; clear communication and team motivation.

Rebecca Poole (Athletics)

Rebecca was 3rd at the English Schools Track and Field Championship where she represented Hampshire and 4th at the School Games as part of the South of England team in the 1500m Steeple Chase. She also represented Hampshire at the English Schools Cross Country Championship and Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships. Rebecca is ranked 4th in the UK for an u17 girl in the 1500m s/c and is the Hampshire Schools Champion.

Tillie Reid (Tennis)

Tillie is a member of Oakley Tennis Club where she competes in the mixed doubles A Team. She is a member of the county training squad and was part of the team that won the Premier League in 2017. Tillie also plays for Sherfield School and has won all but one of her tennis matches competing for them. In 2017, Tillie won National ISA Tournaments and is 5th in Hampshire for the u14 age group.

Emily Rogerson (Swimming)

Some of Emily’s notable successes in 2017 were becoming Bluefins 13 years old Club Champion, having her abilities identified and being promoted into the performance squad at Basingstoke Bluefins along with qualifying for 8 events in the County Championships and 2 events in the South East Regional Championships. Her ranking is 9th in Hampshire, 34th in the Region, and 192nd nationally for the 200m Butterfly.

Aimee Slimin (Equestrian-Show Jumping)

In 2017 Aimee qualified for the British Show Jumping National Amateur Final and achieved 12th place at the Senior Show Jumping Championship of Great Britain along with 2nd place at the British Riding Clubs Area Winter Novice Championships. She accumulated 40 British Show Jumping points in her first full year of senior affiliated competition despite balancing competing with her GCSE’s.

Heather Statham (Bowls)

In 2017, Heather became the youngest ever winner of the Oakley bowling Club Women’s Singles and went on to lift the County 2 Wood Singles Title where she competed against over 100 other clubs.  Representing Hampshire at the National Championships she then accounted for 2 international players before bowing out in her third game. She also won the County Junior Pairs title with Nicole Rogers.

Mollie White (Karate)

Mollie won two gold medals in the Welsh Karate Open and also competed at the European competition in London. She performed well in all competitions entered and qualified to grade up to brown and white belt. Mollie is a role model for the younger girls at her club and helps them with their technique.

Hannah Wiles (Waterpolo)

Hannah plays Waterpolo for Basingstoke Bluefins and also represents Hampshire. She trained and competed for the South East Region and also represented both under 16 and under 14 girls at the Inter-Regional Championships. Hannah attends the regional Academy sessions held monthly in Worthing which is part of the player pathway. She thrives on opportunities when she plays with the ladies team and listens and takes on board advice and suggestions on match play.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with the Local Sports Council provide a grant scheme to assist sports men and women in their efforts to achieve full National, International and Olympic honours. Grants are available to provided assistance with travelling and coaching expenses, qualifications, and equipment and clothing requirements.

Grant Aid application forms are available on request from the Borough Council (01256 845442) as from September 1st and must be submitted by 1st December each year to the Local Sports Council - (This email address is being protected from spambots. Applicants must be at least County Standard or equivalent within their sport and priority will be given to Under 25’s.
