Junior Sportswomen
Twenty Three nominations for the 2019 Basingstoke & Deane Sports Awards in 14 different sports were received and reviewed by a independent panel of six judges. A group of finalists were invited to the Apollo Hotel Awards evening on Friday evening February 28th and the photos at the bottom of this page are just a selection of candidates and not relevant to any voting.
Paige Adcock - Kickboxing
In 2019 Paige competed in the GB Grand slam where she won the overall grand championship for the under 18’s, despite fighting people 3 years older than her. Team GBs Silver at the European Championships was a first for Paige she has her sights on the world’s for 2020. She also got silver in Flanders Cup which is one of the toughest tournaments of the year and achieved Bronze in the British Championships.
Lenka Addington – Athletics
Lenka achieved a personal best of 1.5m in the high jump, which puts her ranked 17th in the South East Region for her age group and 88th in the UK age group. She won the Hampshire Championship High Jump age group and was invited to be part of the Hampshire gifted athlete training programme at Winchester.
Maggie Brown – Kickboxing (3rd Last Year)
Maggie had major successes in 2019, and is settling in to become one of the top fighters in her division. She fights in both the points and light contact divisions and is WAKO British champion. Highlights include, Flanders open Belgium Gold, Cimac Super league Grand champion, Gold and silver medals at Cimac Super league National tournaments, Gold medal Watford international tournament, Gold and Silver medal Watford int. tournament and Gold and Silver Medal British Grand slam.
Mataya Caulkett-Brabant – Ice Skating & Football
Mataya specialises in Ice skating and football. Her main achievements for 2019 were gaining superb results in the Level 2 Skate Southern International 2019 as well as coming 4th London, 5th Coventry, 11th Sheffield and 7th in Guildford. Mataya strives to uphold the best traditions of sport and fair play in all aspects of her life, and this is reflected in her attitude to fellow competitors to whom she shows respect and enthusiasm, no matter where she, or they, come in the competition.
Ayomide Cole – Athletics
During 2019 Ayomide won the 100m and 200m at the Hampshire Champs for the 3rd consecutive year, represented Hampshire at English Schools in 100m and 4x100m and set the 100m record in the AVL. She came third in 200m at the National Indoor Championships and won silver at the Southern Athletics Championships. Nationally she is ranked, 8th in 60m and 9th in 100m.
Beatrice Crass – Synchronised Swimming
Beatrice swam at every competition throughout 2019 with her Club ‘Reading Royals’, who are currently the top Club in UK and hold all the major trophies including Redwood Trophy and Combo Cup. Beatrice achieved PB’s in all her figures at the FINA 1st World Age Group Championships in Slovakia. A particular 2019 highlight is that, following GB trials, she has now been selected to the Junior Squad 2020.
Catherine Edwards – Athletics
Catherine has been a dedicated athlete since she was 8 years old. 2019 saw Catherine make the transition from sprinter to 800m runner, where she has shown incredible determination and commitment. She has been rewarded with great performances taking her from a UK ranking of 338th in 2018 to 32nd in 2019, she is also ranked 55th for 400m – a distance she has only run twice! She is county champion and represented Hampshire Schools at the England Schools Championships.
Xanthe Esslemont – Aerobic Gymnastics
In summer 2019 Xanthe qualified into the British Championship Final with a PB and another PB in the Final to place 7th as 1st year Group 2. Then in Autumn, with another Personal Best of 19.587pts, Xanthe took Gold at the Suki National Open in the FIG Group 2 Individual Female and in December on International duties she competed at the Klaipeda International Open, Lithuania where she qualified into the Final of top international Aerobic Gymnasts and produced a fantastic performance to reach the podium with a Bronze Medal
Charlotte Evans – Kickboxing
Charlotte won 14 National and International tournaments in 2019, and finished with 10 further podium places including two bronze medals at the Junior European Championships held in Hungary. She won every open weight championship that she entered during the year and is currently the dominant fighter in her division where she is currently ranked Number One in the world.
Lexie Green – Karate
2019 saw Lexie continue to improve, for both club and country, taking silver in the world championships. She has improved in all areas of her sport and has achieved many great performances in a new age group for 2019. A highlight was the World championships held in Crawley where Lexie performed a demonstration at the opening ceremony after months of hard work. The next step is her Black belt next year and aiming for Europeans in Cyprus 2020.
Isla Hignett – Tennis
Isla won three doubles titles and her first Regional singles along with reaching many other semi-finals and quarter finals. She was selected for the 18u girls County Cup Team for the first time and being selected to play in the National Team Tennis League was also a first. Winning the Hampshire Schools Doubles was another highlight. Isla trains very hard each week both at Totally Tennis and Winchester and is an inspiration to some of the younger players, who often see her practicing when she has some spare time.
Faith Hoban – Trampolining
Faith has qualified for both English and British Disability Trampolining Finals for the second year running, and has been part of the Great British Disability Trampolining Squad for 2018/2019 season. She developed her coaching experience and now coaches under 5’s at club level. Faith is the only disability gymnast at the club and often competes alone at national competitions. She has worked with the club to help support a greater understanding of disability sports, particularly visual impairment.
Alexis Hornsby – Biathle/Triathle/Laser Run
In Alexis’s second year of competing as a 10-year-old, she became the European U11 Triathle Individual Silver Medallist, and European Triathle Team Gold Medallist. Other achievements were; European U11 Biathle Individual Bronze Medallist, European Biathle Team Gold Medallist. European U11 Laser Run Individual Bronze Medallist, European Laser Run Team Gold Medallist, European Laser Run Mixed Team Gold Medallist and World U11 Laser Run Mixed Team Bronze Medallist.
Lily-Mae Lancaster Evans – Modern Pentathlon
Lily-Mae qualified for and competed at both the World and European Laser Run - U13G category, despite being only aged 10 and one of the youngest. She came 4th and won a Silver Team Medal at the Europeans and 10th in the World. She won triple Gold at the British Discover Laser Run Championships and Silver at the National Schools Biathle
Isabelle Law – Athletics, Cross County, Javelin
Isabelle is regularly selected to represent Hampshire County at Athletics and XC, including competing in numerous regional and national athletics competitions. Isabelle won a bronze medal in the national prep school javelin finals, achieved 1st place in the ESAA South West Final, and 2nd place in the Hampshire Schools XC Championships.
Alice Lovett – Bowling
2019 saw Alice win Regional under 18 singles, qualify for under 25 National Singles Finals and be selected for the England U18 academy. Highlights of the year also included reaching National Finals in Ladies Triples and Rinks Outdoors. She was the youngest rink ever to qualify for the National Finals and was also selected to play for the County Ladies team indoors.
Daniella Nash Oliver - Athletics
2019 saw Daniella establish herself as an U17 athlete. Whilst bottom of her age group Dani was selected on three occasions to represent Hampshire in the Discus and Javelin. She also set a debut senior performance representing her Club and scored vital points needed for the Club’s chase of a promotion. Exceptional performances for Daniella in 2019 include 3rd place u17 girls at the Basingstoke club champs and achieving U17 Women’s field event of the year award.
Anaya Patel - Table Tennis (2nd last year)
Anaya is 14 years of age and is a Member of the England Youth Squad & is representing England in both U15/U18 events. She is No 2 in U15 Girls and is in the top 12 for U18 in England. Anaya is Currently No 1 in Hampshire in U15, U18 category and No 2 in Hampshire in the U21 category. She is aiming to be selected for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Jasmine Payne – Hockey
Jasmine’s greatest achievements during 2019 were; to be selected for the U16 Hampshire squad and to be asked to be Captain in the U16 junior Girls team at Basingstoke Hockey Club. She is juggling a part time job along with training sessions during the week and matches at weekends but is just loving every minute of it.
Ellen Phillips –Cyclocross & Road racing
In 2019 Ellen consistently finished in the top 20 in National cyclocross races in her first year at this level. She is committed to cycling and inspires other with her talent and dedication plus is more than happy to assist team mates in the pits at events and also did a 110k charity sponsored ride. Ellen was 9th girl in the European Junior tour in Holland and has a British cyclocross National ranking of 33rd plus has regular podium finishes in the Wessex cyclocross
Isabel Pinder – Athletics
Isabel exceeded her performance goal during the 2019 season in the 300m. She qualified, and was selected, for the New Balance ESAA English Schools' Championships representing Hampshire placing 4th in her heats and just missed out on the final. She was rewarded for her continued hard work when she helped the Hampshire Team U17W place 1st in the 4x100m at the championship. Isabel also achieved 3rd in the South of England Championshjp and finished the season ranked 4th (indoor) and 12th (outdoor) for the 400m.
Milly Raybould – Hockey
In the last year, in her first season, Milly has gone from not knowing what Hockey stick to buy and where to get one from, to the confident young lady she is now, playing for the Basingstoke Ladies 4 Team, Hampshire Team and being awarded U16’s Female Player of the Year by her club. Milly has far exceeded what she had hoped to achieve, and it is solely down to her hard work and commitment.
Ava Wilson – Figure Skating
11 year old Figure Skater, Ava, has qualified for the British Championships for the second year by securing titles at Coventry and Bradford. She gained entry to the GB squad for the third year and completed her figure skating tests. Ava was invited to represent GB in an international competition and secured her first victory abroad.
