Up and coming Junior Sportsmen talent ...

A very strong set of 29 applications for Grant Aid, Scholarships plus consideration for the 2017 Junior Sportsmen awards were received. These have now been reviewed and tough decisions made resulting with those starred below invited to the Sports Awards at the Apollo Hotel on February 23rd and the others attending a mayors reception the following week.

  * Charlie Baker (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

Charlie competes in the 38kg division and won two national titles in 2017, English Champion and British Champion. 2017 saw Charlie fight in a higher ranked division against rivals that were bigger and heavier than he is, but with his determination and will to win he managed to exceed his 2017 goals.

  * Samuel Brooks (Ice Hockey)

Sam is an exceptional Ice Hockey Player who reads the game well and is an amazing team player. In the 2017 season he played for the U18s team within the junior club and also ‘Basingstoke Buffalo’. He also signed a 2 way deal which saw him play for the Bison. He attended trials for Great Britain U18s and he has previously represented the South West throughout his junior career at all age groups.

Reece Bryant (Athletics)

Rece Joined Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Club in July and was selected to compete at the Hampshire Schools Championship where he finished 7th in the 100m and he was also part of the relay squad. Rece is ranked 31st in the UK for 100m in the u15 category and aims to improve his times in 2018.

  * Jacob Caine (Archery) NATS

Jacob is part of the GB Team and Archery GB Development squad. He represented Hampshire at several competitions in the senior team and achieved Adult Master Bowman status along with an invitation to shoot at the UK Masters competition. In August he won gold at the Youth Festival where he also outshot the u21’s. Jacob is ranked nationally as 27th in the adults and in 2017 he equalled the Adult Mixed Team World Record at 50m – 158 out of 160.

  * Hayden Corby (Taekwondo) NATS

Hayden’s interest is within Sport Taekwondo, he has continued to develop as a rounded Martial Artist with all the components of Taekwondo and is moving forward through the Kup syllabus. He won a gold medal at each of the national class competitions that he has entered and was invited to join the British Taekwondo Fighting Chance Programme which is a pathway for Taekwondo athletes who have the potential to be part of a future Olympics squad.

Sebastian Courtois (Waterpolo)

Sebastian progressed well in 2017 and was selected for the Hampshire under 16 and under 19 team to play in the South East region inter-Counties against Kent, Surrey and Sussex to move to the next level of player pathway. He also started to play in the Men’s team in Hampshire league games and is progressing to the regional academy in Worthing.

  * Cameron Coveney (Modern Triathle/Biathle/Triathle) NATS

Cameron competed at the National Triathlon and Triathle Championships where he came 6th and 2nd respectively. He also competed at the European Triathle Championships in Portugal where he came 3rd individually and 2nd in the u15 relay team for GB. He also attended a GB Pentathlon World Talent Identification training Camp where he was awarded gold status and came 11th at the Biathlon Championships in November.

  * Charlie Coveney (Modern Triathlon/Biathlon/Biathle/Triathle) NATS

Charlie won the National Biathlon and Biathle Championships along with the European Championships for Biathle. He is ranked 3rd in the UK, in his age group, for the British Modern Biathlon Championships, and came 2nd at the European Triathle Championship and 4th at the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships. Charlie also swam for Bluefin’s at County level in the relays and competed at various cross country events for his school.

Charlie Croucher (Pool)

Charlie won the European Championships and the U21’s BDXPL singles at the Academy in Basingstoke for the second year in a row. He plays for Hampshire, met all 2017 goals and is an inspiration to fellow teammates

  * Kienan Dolan (Karate) NATS

Kienan competed successfully throughout 2017, winning gold cadet medals at Karate Kata and Kumite throughout the year. He is an established team member on the Karate Sport England squad where he competed in various international Karate events and he also competes in the National Squad. Kienan is a role model to other performers who look up to him for advice, and in 2017 he was graded to black belt.

  * Arne Esselmont (BMX Racing)

Arne is a member of Andover BMX Club and competed in BMX Male 10 Class and BMX Cruiser 9-12’s. He achieved 57th place at the 2017 UEC BMX European Championships and qualified at all levels through the heats into the knockout phases at all 2017 competitions. He is only 1 of 3 athletes that complete in 2 bike categories and at the British Championships he qualified into the qtr final on the BMX Cruiser as the youngest rider in class.

Jordan Ford (Athletics)

Jordan represented Hampshire at the ESAA Championships and placed 12th in the long jump and 4th in the 4x100m relay. He won gold at the Hampshire County Schools Championship for long jump and broke the BMHAC u15 boy’s long jump record with a jump of 5.91mtrs. Jordan was awarded the U15 Boys Track Award and Junior Athlete Award at the BMHAC awards evening. He also competed in the Wessex League and Alder Valley League where he competed in numerous events throughout the season.

  * Iain Foster (Tumbling Gymnastics) NATS

At the World Age Group Championships, Iain won the silver medal in the male 15-16 category. He was selected for his first international after an outstanding performance at the British Championships where he came 3rd. He also went to the English Championships and won the silver medal. Iain exceeded all expectations in 2017 and is appositive role model within his club where he is highly respected amongst coaches and other gymnasts.

Will Jones (Athletics)

Will was selected to represent Hampshire at the English Schools Championship for Discus in 2017 having switched events in April. He was 2017 Hampshire Discus Champion and won ‘Best Performance of 2017’ in the Alder Valley Boys league. Will is ranked 38th in the UK for Discus and currently holds his year 9 school record for Discus Throw. He also started throwing javelin late season and won his event at Alder Valley League.

Ned Kater (Water Polo)

In 2017 Ned represented South East England under 17 in National Inter-regional competition at Walsall and Hampshire in the Under 19 age group. He was also invited to compete in The Duke of Cambridge Cup which is the selection event for the English Schools international teams. Ned plays for Basingstoke Bluefin’s ’ A’ Team and was awarded South East’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ in an inter-regional competition.

Joshua Kemp (Athletics)

Joshua is a member of Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Club whom he represented at the SEAA Cross Country Relays and SEAA Road Relays. He also competed at the SEAA Track and Field Championship in August in the 1500m. In June, Joshua represented Basingstoke Schools at the Hampshire Schools Athletics Championships for 800m and also attends the Basingstoke Junior Park Run when not competing elsewhere.

  * Sibi Kumara (Karate) NATS

In 2017, Sibi attended three international competitions and helped his Su-Ha-Ri team to retain the gold medal from the previous year’s WIKF British and Irish Championships. He reached the finals in the majority of competitions attended and exceeded his performance goals by not only attending international competitions, but also winning medals at them. Sibi was complimented by the USA lead coach on being a ‘fantastic fighter’ and he is a positive role model to younger club members.

Christian Lindgreen (Golf)

In 2017, Christian represented his college when competing at the AOC County Competition where he came 2nd overall and therefore got the opportunity to compete at the National Competition where he will represent his county later in the college year. He also competed at the South of England Boys Gold competition and many junior opens throughout the year where his top placing was 2nd.   Christian acts as a role model for younger club members and works hard to achieve his goals.

  * George Metzger (Cricket)

George represented South and West England at the Bunbury Cricket Festival and won the T20 tournament beating the North in the final. During the four month selection process he scored a century and a couple of half centuries and was the only wicket keeper at Stowe School. He also made his debut, and scored a century, for Hampshire Academy in July and represented Hampshire at u17, u16 and u15 age groups as well as playing for Basingstoke 1st team all season.

Oli Morgan (Cross Country)

In 2017, Oli represented Hampshire at South East Schools and then at English Schools in Norwich. He trains 5 times a week and works hard to get to the level he is at. Oli’s sheer strength and determination is what has made him successful and he exceeded his 2017 targets of Hampshire representation and achieving a 5k PB of 17.53. He also represented Hampshire at the Southern Inter-Counties in December.

Ashley Nethercliffe (Bowls)

Ashley won his clubs Men’s Singles title (which he won the last three years), and he represents Hampshire at under 25 level. He is a member of the County’s Middleton Cup Team and played in all the County’s inter-county championship games and was the County indoor under 25 Champion for the 4th year running. He also represents Hampshire at senior level and regularly wins titles at his indoor club.

Toby Osborne (Martial Arts)

Toby won a bronze medal at both the UK Karate Open Championship in individual KATA and the Shinwa Karate Kai Open Karate Championships in Team Kumite. In 2017 he also took part in the British Open, Karate Wales Open and WUKF Karate League. He trains twice a week in normal classes and once a week with his competition squad.

  * Anthony Parmar (Karate) NATS

Anthony competed in the 12-13yr old cat at the WIKF Karate World Championship in October and in Kata he is ranked 4th. In the team 12-13 fighting event he took gold and in individual fighting he took bronze. At the British and Irish WIKF National Championship, Anthony won silver in Kata and in team fighting he took gold with his team. He is a well -liked member of the squad both inside and outside of the dojo.

Clarke Randall (Pool)

Clarke was part of the U15 European Champions team of which he was captain, and has played for u18’s as a county player for the last five years. He also plays Men’s C County and is now to play at u18’s at National level.

Harry Richardson (Athletics)

Harry made a comeback in 2017 after battling with injury for two years, winning a gold medal for 800m at the Hampshire County Championship, 3rd place at the London Indoor Games 400m and 5th place in 800m at the Southern Championships. He also achieved a new 800m PB of 1:55.11 at the Watford Open Meeting. Harry ranks 55th for 800m and 67th for 400m in the under 20 age category.

Callum Rogerson (Swimming)

Callum was fourth in the 10 year old boy category at the Basingstoke Bluefins Club Championships and achieved a county qualification time for 50m butterfly. He is ranked 14th within the county, 64th in the region, and 375th nationally for the 50m butterfly. Callum is a key member of his squad has also competed in the Arena League for Bluefins.

  * William Sadler (Swimming)

William represented London West region in the National ISA Swimming Championships in January 2017, gaining 2 silver medals in the relays. He trains up to 19 hours per week in the performance squad at Basingstoke Bluefins. In the Club Championships he entered, and won, 7 events in the 17/18 year boy’s category. Over the year, William also achieved qualifying times for the County and Regional Championships.

  * Lucas Spiers (Karate) NATS

Lucas won gold in individual Kumite and Team Kumite in the WIKF World Championship and at the WIKF British Championships he won two golds, one silver and one bronze. At many of the 2017 competitions he stepped up a category from age 12-13yrs to 14-15yrs. He acts as a positive role model by assisting at junior sessions and encouraging other team members while on the mat and with warming up.

Leo White (Karate)

Leon won a bronze medal in Kata, team fighting and individual fighting in the Europeans to qualify for the 2018 Worlds. During 2017 he won a total of five bronze medals and performed well in all competitions, getting both medals and experience in fighting. He is a role model for younger students at his club where he helps them with their technique.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with the Local Sports Council provide a grant scheme to assist sports men and women in their efforts to achieve full National, International and Olympic honours. Grants are available to provided assistance with travelling and coaching expenses, qualifications, and equipment and clothing requirements.

Grant Aid application forms are available on request from the Borough Council (01256 845442) as from September 1st and must be submitted by 6th December each year to the Local Sports Council - (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) at 3 Dragonfly Drive, Lychpit, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG24 8RU

Applicants must be at least County Standard or equivalent within their sport and priority will be given to Under 25’s. Applications should be fully supported by the coach and club of the applicant and also include any other additional information that would support the grant application e.g. Press Releases.
